Aberaeron is best known for its planned Georgian streets and brightly painted houses around the harbour. Those buildings mostly have smooth render or painted finishes, but step a few streets back, or out to the estates and villages around the town, and pebble dash is everywhere. On a coast this exposed, it needs looking after.

We repair pebble dash across Aberaeron and the surrounding part of Ceredigion. Our work ranges from sealing small cracks and replacing loose patches to re-dashing whole walls, gently cleaning off green growth, and painting sound dash with breathable masonry coatings.

Because the town centre is so distinctive, we are also careful about where changes to a building's appearance may need approval. For dashed properties outside the historic core, the focus is usually practical: keep water out, keep the wall sound, and make repairs blend in as well as possible.

Seafront exposure and the houses behind the harbour

Semi-detached house front

The historic heart of Aberaeron was laid out in the early nineteenth century, with terraces and squares around the harbour. Beyond that core, the town grew through the twentieth century with council housing, private semis and bungalows, many finished in pebble dash or spar dash. Out in the countryside there are stone farmhouses and cottages, some dashed long ago to keep weather out of solid walls.

The town faces straight onto Cardigan Bay, so westerly gales drive rain and salt spray into seaward walls. The Aeron valley behind brings its own damp air. On the higher ground around the town, houses catch wind from several directions.

These conditions show up in predictable ways. On dashed estate houses we see cracks opening at window corners and along floor lines, followed by hollow areas as water gets behind. Seaward gable ends often lose stones and develop large blown patches. Older dashed cottages sometimes have hard cement coats that have trapped moisture in the stone, leading to damp inside and render coming away outside.

Our repairs here focus on sound preparation and suitable materials. We cut back to firmly bonded render, rebuild with properly graded coats, and use breathable products on solid walls. We also check gutters, sills and drips, because on such an exposed coast poor detailing will undo a good repair.

Pebble dash jobs we handle in the Aberaeron area

  • Cracks around windows and doors on post-war estate houses
  • Blown sections on seaward gables and exposed corners
  • Breathable repairs and coatings on dashed stone cottages
  • Cleaning lichen and algae from walls facing away from the sun
  • Full re-dashing where patches have built up over the years
  • Exterior refreshes for holiday cottages and guest houses

Small cracks are often the start of bigger problems on this coast, so our crack repairs are a common first step. Where a wall has been patched many times and looks uneven, re-dashing the whole elevation gives a consistent finish.

If you would rather have a painted look closer to the town's famous colours, painting pebble dash with a suitable masonry coating is an option, as long as the dash underneath is sound and any local requirements on colour are checked first.

Good to know

Useful questions about pebble dash in Aberaeron

Can I paint my pebble dash a bright colour like the harbour houses?

Possibly, but check first. Aberaeron's centre is a conservation area with many listed buildings, and colour changes there may need approval. Outside the core there is usually more freedom. We can advise on breathable masonry paints, but we recommend confirming with Ceredigion County Council before choosing a colour.

My seaward wall keeps losing stones. Why?

Wind-driven rain and salt work into the top coat, and frost then loosens it. Over time the stones wash out and the base coat is exposed. Sometimes the underlying render is still sound, sometimes not. We tap the wall to check before deciding between a patch, a coating or re-dashing.

Do you work in the villages inland from Aberaeron?

Yes. We cover the Aeron valley and nearby villages such as Ciliau Aeron, Llanarth, Oakford and Cross Inn, as well as the coastal stretch towards New Quay and Llanon. Rural properties may need more planning for access and materials, which we sort out at the survey.

My cottage feels damp inside. Could the dash be the cause?

It can be. Hard cement dash on a solid stone wall can stop moisture escaping, and cracks let rain in on top. Not all damp comes from render, so other causes should be ruled out too. If the dash is the problem, we can discuss breathable repairs or careful removal.

How do you protect new render from sea winds?

Strong winds can dry fresh render too quickly and cause cracking. We sheet scaffolding where needed, avoid working in gales, and keep an eye on the forecast so curing is not rushed. If conditions turn, we pause rather than risk the finish.

How we work when visiting Aberaeron

Our survey covers every elevation. We tap the render to find hollow areas, look for cracks and failed patches, and check whether the wall is solid stone or modern blockwork. Where colour or texture matters, we bring aggregate samples to compare.

The written quote explains scaffold, access and parking – which can be tight in the older streets – along with how we will plan around the weather. We protect windows, doors and planting while we work and leave the site tidy. To arrange a visit, call 07565 147 170 or send us a message through the website form.

FAQs

Pebble dash repair in Aberaeron: FAQs

What determines the cost of my repair?

We look at the area involved, how much render is loose, the height and access, any scaffold or sheeting needed on an exposed site, and the materials suited to your wall. Specialist breathable products and difficult matching can affect the price. We give a fixed written quote after a survey.

Will the repair match my existing dash?

We aim for a close match and show samples first. On older, weathered walls an exact match is not always possible, and fresh stones can look brighter at first. Painting or re-dashing a whole elevation is the most reliable way to get a completely uniform look.

Can you remove pebble dash from my house?

We can, but we survey first. Removing dash can damage soft brick, block or stone underneath, and the wall will need a new finish afterwards. Our pebble dash removal page explains how we decide whether it is the right approach.

Will a full re-render need building control?

It may. Re-rendering a large proportion of a wall can trigger requirements to improve insulation. Whether this applies depends on the work, so we advise checking with building control before a full re-render. Patch repairs are not normally affected.

Do you work on holiday lets and guest houses?

Yes. We understand bookings matter, so we try to schedule work in quieter periods and keep disruption low. Let us know your availability when you enquire, and we will look for a weather window that fits around guests.
