On the most exposed tip of Pembrokeshire, pebble dash works harder than almost anywhere. We repair and renew it on homes, holiday lets and businesses around St Davids.
Britain's smallest city sits on a peninsula with the Atlantic on three sides. Weather reaches St Davids with nothing to slow it down, and that shows on the outside of buildings. Pebble dash that might last decades further inland can crack, lose stones and come away from the wall far sooner out here, particularly on elevations that face west.
We carry out pebble dash repairs across St Davids and the surrounding coast, for permanent residents, owners of second homes and holiday lets, and local businesses. The work ranges from sealing a single crack before it lets water in, to cutting out and re-dashing hollow sections, to cleaning and coating whole walls that have become tired and stained.
Because so much of the area is protected landscape and the city has a historic centre around the cathedral, we also take care to point out when a change of finish or colour might need checking with the planning authority first. Like-for-like repair is usually the simplest route, and that is where most of our work here starts.
Building on the peninsula: stone, dash and Atlantic weather
Traditional houses around St Davids are mostly built of local stone with thick solid walls. Many were limewashed or rendered historically, and through the twentieth century plenty were given a cement-based dash to try to stop wind-driven rain soaking through. Alongside them are post-war council houses, bungalows and later private homes, often dashed from new, plus converted farm buildings out on the headlands.
Exposure is the defining factor. Gales come in straight off the sea, rain is driven horizontally into walls, and salt spray carries well inland. Hard cement dash on an old stone wall can crack as the wall moves slightly with wetting and drying; water then gets behind it and has no easy way out, so the render loosens and the stone underneath stays damp.
On newer blockwork houses the problems are more familiar: cracking at openings, blown areas on gable ends, and stones washing out of a weak top coat. Moss and lichen also grow freely in the clean, damp air.
That shapes how we approach repairs here. On traditional solid walls we lean towards breathable, vapour-permeable materials rather than adding more hard cement. On modern houses we use well-graded mixes and pay attention to beads, drips and sills that shed water. And we schedule carefully – the curing window needs dry weather above about 5°C, and on the peninsula that can change by the hour.
Pebble dash jobs we see most often around St Davids
Hollow, cracked dash on west-facing gables of stone cottages
Holiday let exteriors refreshed before the season starts
Lichen, moss and salt staining cleaned off with a soft-wash
Failed cement dash removed from old stone walls where the background allows
Patch repairs on post-war bungalows and semis
Breathable masonry coatings over sound dash
Holiday let owners often contact us after a winter of storms has left a wall cracked or stained. Booking a patch repair in early spring gives the render time to cure before guests arrive. Where a cottage has hard cement dash trapping moisture in the stone, careful pebble dash removal may be worth considering – we always assess the stone first, because taking dash off can damage a soft or crumbling background.
If the dash is sound but grubby and green, our pebble dash cleaning service lifts growth without high-pressure blasting.

Useful questions about pebble dash in St Davids
Do I need permission to change the finish on my St Davids property?
It depends on where it is and whether it is listed. St Davids lies within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and the city centre has historic protections. Before changing colour or switching from dash to another finish, we recommend checking with the relevant planning authority. Like-for-like repairs are generally simpler.
Why has the dash on my stone cottage cracked so badly?
Hard cement dash and old stone walls often do not get on. The stone moves and breathes, the cement does not, and cracks form. Atlantic rain then drives into those cracks and the render loosens. We look at whether repair, removal or a more breathable finish is the better long-term answer for your wall.
Can you work on a holiday let between bookings?
We can try. Tell us your booking calendar when you enquire and we will look for a weather window that fits. Small repairs can sometimes be done in a short gap. Larger jobs are best booked in the quieter months, accepting that the weather may push dates around a little.
Is it worth repairing dash on such an exposed house?
Usually, yes. Leaving cracks open on the peninsula lets water into the wall far faster than in sheltered spots. A timely repair, done with suitable materials and good detailing around sills and edges, protects the wall and avoids bigger damage. We will tell you honestly if a full replacement is the wiser choice.
What is the green and grey growth on my walls?
In the clean, damp air around St Davids, algae, moss and lichen grow readily on pebble dash. Most of it is cosmetic, but thick growth holds moisture against the wall. A soft-wash clean removes it and slows regrowth. We check the render underneath at the same time for any hollow areas.

How a survey and repair works in St Davids
When we visit, we go round each wall and tap the dash to find hollow sections, look closely at cracks, and check how the building is made – stone or block – because that changes which materials we use. If matching matters, we bring aggregate samples to compare with your existing finish.
The written quote sets out access and any scaffold, parking on narrow lanes, and how we will plan around the coastal weather. During the work we protect windows, paths and gardens, and we leave the site clean. To book, call 07565 147 170 or send details through our contact form.

Cost depends on the area involved, how much hollow render must be removed, access and scaffold, the type of wall underneath and the materials needed. Breathable systems for stone walls and hard-to-match aggregates can affect price. We give a fixed written quote after we have seen the building, not a guess over the phone.
Can you match the colour of my existing dash?
We get as close as possible. Old dash has weathered and the original stone may no longer be available, so a perfect match is not always achievable. We show samples against your wall first. Where you want complete uniformity, a coating or full re-dash of that elevation gives a consistent result.
Do you only work on houses?
No. We also repair pebble dash on guest houses, shops, cafés and other commercial buildings, planning around opening hours where we can. Our commercial repairs page explains how we handle business premises.
Will scaffolding be needed?
For most work above head height, yes, or at least a safe access tower. On two-storey houses and gable ends scaffold is usually the safest option. In exposed spots it also needs proper sheeting and ties. We include this in the quote so you know the full cost from the start.
How long should a repair last?
A well-done repair with suitable materials should last many years, but we do not quote fixed lifespans because exposure, the condition of the wall and maintenance all play a part. Keeping gutters clear, fixing leaks and treating new cracks early all help repairs last longer.
