Cardiff has more pebble dash than most people notice. It covers the gable ends of old terraces, the fronts of inter-war semis in the northern suburbs and whole streets of council-built houses on the estates to the east and west of the city. Most of it has been on the walls for fifty years or more, and a good deal of it is now cracked, patched in mismatched colours or sounding hollow when you knock on it.
That matters because dash is the first line of defence against rain. Once a crack opens, water gets behind the render, and on a cold night it freezes, expands and pushes the coating away from the brick. Left long enough, sections drop off and damp starts to show on the inside.
We work across Cardiff on crack repairs, patch repairs, full re-dashing, cleaning, painting and re-rendering, for homeowners, landlords and businesses. The team brings decades of experience in home improvement and repair, and we will always tell you plainly whether a wall needs a small repair or something bigger.
Cardiff's housing and why its pebble dash fails
The city grew quickly in the late 1800s on the back of the docks, and the long terraces of Cathays, Canton, Splott and Grangetown were mostly built in brick or stone with no render at all. Pebble dash tended to arrive later, often applied in the mid-twentieth century to cover weathered brickwork or tired stone, and sometimes only to a rear wing or side wall. Between the wars and after 1945, Cardiff added large estates in places such as Ely, Llanrumney and Rumney, and many of those houses were dashed from new.
The weather does the rest. Cardiff sits on the Bristol Channel, and the prevailing south-westerlies drive a lot of rain against exposed elevations. Walls facing that way stay wet for long spells, and older dash, often laid in a hard cement mix over softer brick, struggles to dry out.
Failures we commonly find here:
Fine crazing that lets water soak in behind the coat
Hollow patches around bay windows and where extensions meet the original house
Old repairs in plain grey cement that stand out against the pebbles
Green staining on north-facing and shaded walls
On older solid-wall houses we pay close attention to breathability, because sealing a damp wall in can make matters worse rather than better.
Pebble dash jobs we often take on in Cardiff
Raking out and filling cracks on terrace gable ends before more water gets in
Cutting out hollow sections on semis and re-dashing them with a closely matched aggregate
Soft-washing algae and grime off dash on shaded rear elevations
Re-dashing whole elevations where the old coat has failed in too many places to patch
Repairs and redecoration on shop frontages, flats above shops and rental houses
A lot of Cardiff work starts small. Someone spots a crack above a window or a handful of pebbles on the path, and the real question is whether a patch repair will do or whether the wall needs more. We test the surrounding render before giving an answer. If most of it is sound, a careful repair is the sensible choice. If large areas sound hollow, re-dashing the elevation usually gives a better long-term result than chasing one patch after another.
Landlords and managing agents with several properties across the city can talk to us about commercial pebble dash repair, which covers shops, offices and blocks of flats.

Useful questions about pebble dash in Cardiff
My Cardiff terrace opens straight onto the pavement. How do you get access?
Most inner-city terraces have no front garden and only a rear lane, so we plan access before we price. Smaller repairs can often be reached with a tower or ladders. Where a scaffold has to stand on the pavement, the scaffolding firm will normally need a licence from Cardiff Council, and we build that lead time into the programme.
Does it matter if my house is in a Cardiff conservation area?
It can. Several neighbourhoods in the city have conservation area status. Like-for-like repairs are often straightforward, but changing the look of a wall, such as rendering over dash or painting it a new colour, may need consent. We suggest checking with Cardiff Council's planning team first, and we can describe the proposed work in writing to help.
Which wall of a Cardiff house usually fails first?
In our experience it is normally the south- or west-facing elevation, because that side takes the wind-driven rain coming up the Bristol Channel. Gable ends on corner plots are also vulnerable, as they have no neighbour to shelter them. Shaded rear walls tend to suffer more from algae than from cracking.
My gable end faces next door's garden. Can you still repair it?
Usually, yes, but it needs a friendly conversation with your neighbour first, as we may need to stand a ladder or scaffold on their side. We keep the footprint small, protect their paving and planting with sheeting, and clear up fully each day. Many Cardiff gable repairs can be completed in a short visit.
When is the best time of year to have pebble dash work done in Cardiff?
Late spring through to early autumn is ideal. Render and dash need dry spells and temperatures above roughly 5°C to cure properly, and Cardiff winters can be wet for weeks at a time. Small crack repairs can sometimes be done in winter if the forecast allows, but larger re-dashing is best booked for the warmer months.

What happens when we visit a Cardiff property
We start with a walk round the outside, looking at cracks, staining and old repairs, then tap the render with a small hammer to find hollow or drummy areas that are not visible from the ground. If you want a colour or aggregate match, we bring or prepare samples so you can see them against the existing wall in daylight.
Parking is restricted on many Cardiff streets, so we will ask about permits or a space for the van before we arrive. We agree access, any scaffold and a weather window with you, then sheet paths, windows and plants while we work and leave the site swept each evening. To arrange a visit, call 07565 147 170 or use the contact form.
Reviews
What customers in and around Cardiff say
Reviews from local customers will appear here.
Had a job done by us? Leave a review — it only takes a minute.
Every job is priced individually after a survey. The main factors are the area involved, how much render is hollow and needs cutting out, whether scaffolding is required, the type of finish and how easy access is. A crack repair on a ground-floor wall costs far less than re-dashing a three-storey gable, so we always give a written quote.
Will the repair match my existing pebble dash?
We get as close as we can. Older Cardiff dash has often weathered and faded, and the original aggregate may no longer be made, so an exact match is not always possible. We source the nearest stone, test samples on the wall and talk through options, such as re-dashing a whole elevation, if a seamless finish matters to you.
How long does a typical job take?
Small crack and patch repairs can often be completed in a day or two. Re-dashing a full elevation usually takes longer, because each coat needs time to set before the next goes on and we have to work around the weather. We give you a realistic timescale with the quote and keep you updated if rain delays us.
Can you remove pebble dash from a Cardiff terrace to show the brick?
Sometimes, but it is not always wise. Taking dash off can damage the brick face underneath, especially on softer Victorian bricks, and what is revealed may be patched or poor quality. We survey first and may suggest a test area. You can read more on our pebble dash removal page.
Do you work on flats and commercial buildings in Cardiff?
Yes. We carry out repairs, cleaning and re-dashing for landlords, housing associations, shops and other business premises as well as private homes. For occupied buildings we plan the work to keep entrances clear and disruption low, and we can phase larger jobs so that tenants and customers are affected as little as possible.
